Streetcats Foundation and its National Children's Coalition
first began working with streetkids, runaways and other
at risk children in 1988 on the streets of New York, Los
Angeles and San Francisco. Our unique involvement in the
lives of youth and young adults on the streets helped turn
the lives around of children society had written off as
'unreachable.' In 1992, Streetcats founded the National
Children's Coalition (NCC) as both a much-needed national
networking organization among children's and youth groups
throughout the country and a central national resource center
for every kind of information and referral related to children,
youth, parenting and K-12 education. Today, NCC is one of
the three largest such organizations in the United States,
has won 27 awards and works with over 600 other youth groups.

In Kampala, Uganda, a group of local and expatriate Christians
have launched a novel approach to the growing numbers of
children on the streets. They started The Tiger's Club Project
-- a football club open to street boys -- to provide a body
for the boys to belong to, a focus for their energies and
pride, and a means to come alongside them, to learn about
and help with their real needs.

United Nations Children's Fund in 130 countries. UNICEF's
aim is to prevent children from living and working on the
streets. Main UNICEF programs--health, nutrition, water
and education--help to create sustainable development. This
means that people will not be forced to migrate to towns
in search of work and scarce resources--such migration is
a typical trigger for family breakdown and the first steps
to children becoming separated from a home environment.

Across the world, in the thirty or so wars that currently
rage, millions of children's lives are being changed for
the worse. In the short term, War Child, with its reputation
for fast, effective work, provides food, medicine and other
basic humanitarian needs. But War Child also keeps fighting
for children long after the war has finished, trying to
ensure that children who have witnessed what should never
be seen - murder, violence, rape - have all they need to
begin the long process of rebuilding their lives.

YUVA has been working with street children in Mumbai (formerly
Bombay) for the last eleven years. Our initiatives have
ranged from evolving alternate models to address children's
shelter, health, nutrition, education rights to counselling,
group building, personality development and leadership training.
We have also been active in taking up issues of violation
of street children's rights such as police harassment, employer
abuse etc. We have been part of the group which has initiated
a National Campaign Against Child Labour. Other efforts
have included understanding the UN Convention on the Rights
of the Child and its potential for furthering the realization
of children's rights. Lobbying for policy changes, documentation
and enabling children's expression have also been important
areas of work.
